India 04
Nic was very delighted to have the opportunity to visit India in 2004, mostly as his wife wanted to visit a great friend in Delhi, and to use the opportunity to travel around the desert region of Rajasthan, full of so much beauty and colour. He tries to indicate the colour in black and white, as well as the surprised reactions of a traveller in a country both wonderful and strange. The photographs are reactions, a form of trying to understand what we are looking at, and of trying to portray the incredible beauty and diversity of the country, or of the parts he saw, without being flattering in the worst sense of the word. It is not a country that needs flattery, at every turn you see parts of many great civilizations, and great beauty. Whether there is enough in the photographs for you to think that he has achieved that is for you to decide, but if you know India and feel a resonance, or a new feeling about a place you know, or just a new emotion, well then his trip will have had a success with your human feelings. He says he doesn’t really know why people take photographs, but he has no choice.
